Tuticorin
Port
Tuticorin a small town with a rich maritime history
is a centre of maritime trade and pearl fishery. The early years
of the 19th century marked the commercial rise of Tuticorin. The
natural harbour and rich hinterland of Tuticorin Port prompted the
East India company to plan the development of the Harbour. The lighthouse
built in 1842 marked the beginning of the history of Tuticorin harbour
development.
The
Port is situated at Latitude 8 45' North and Longitude 78 13' East
on the east coast of India about 540 kms., Southwest of Chennai, in
the state of Tamil Nadu. It is located in the Gulf of Mannar with
Sri Lanka on the southeast.
Tuticorin
Port is the first Indian Port to get certified under ISO-9002 for
its meritorious service. The Port is strategically located very close
to major international sea routes. It is well connected to various
trade centres within Tamil Nadu and the neighbouring states of Kerala,
Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh by National and State highways. The port
is also linked to the broad guage railway system of the country.
